Light 12 April 1943 Siolim handstamp ties two 7-1/2-tanga stamps franking #6 cover from Gioffredo Mannu in Bardez to Mrs. Gina Mannu in Genova Italia, 'Written in Italian', 'Via Istanbul / Sofia', British censor markings (taped ends, at Baghdad or Karachi or both?, one tied by PASSED DHC/1 handstamp in black, ). Once at Istanbul it probably went by the Orient Express train to Sofia Bulgaria where it received its Oberkommando der Wehrmacht censorship in German-occupied Jugoslavia. In April 1943 Mussolini was still in power, so once in Trieste the letter would have been clear of wartime impediments and sent on by the ordinary Italian postal service. The lower half of the address side reads "by Comite International de la Croix Rouge / Genève / Suisse" suggesting to us that the writer was either a member of that organization, or appealing to it for assistance in getting this civilian mail through treacherous territory and to its destination. One marking in violet 'Karachi Durban' partially under the British censor tape we are not sure we understand; if it was a censor in British India suggesting Karachi and then Durban routing, he was overruled in Karachi. Interesting, however you interpret it. $400.00 p
