The Roosevelt referred to was Theodore Roosevelt who had just returned from Africa and was traveling about the US speaking on the New Nationalism & the Progressive Movement). We speculate that the stage name 'Teddy' could have arisen from the Roosevelt of the same name, because he did spend time in Meeker and could well have once been its passenger!
