Former is for a skiff of freight when Will Chapman was clerk; latter is for towing a boat to Bowman Run WV when J. M Roedel was clerk. Both were when J. C. Edwards was the Captain. Withers & Van Devender (Parkersburg West Virginia) for logs towed from Guyan to Pomeroy Ohio & Twelve Pole West Virginia to Pomeroy & another trip from Point Pleasant. Illustrated billhead shows the steamer Catherine Davis underway. We could not find paper memorabilia of any kind offered for this towing company or for the ship when we searched the Internet. The company incorporated in 1905 with 4 steamers; this card lists 5 -- Henry M. Stanley, Tacoma, Greenwood, Courier & M. P. Wells) so it is a bit later. Built for the US Lighthouse Service in Jeffersonville Indiana and named Joseph Henry, this side-wheeler served in the 15th Lighthouse District at Memphis tending navigational aids. Decommissioned in 1903, it was sold & renamed the Louisiana, and later ended its career as we see here in 1916 (once again renamed). A model of this historic ship was first displayed in the Marine Transportation Hall of the Smithsonian & now is on view at its Hall of American Enterprise. Snag boats removed hazards to navigation -- such as sunken logs & rocks - with a split bow, so the could get over it and lift the snag with an A-frame crane. These features make the postcard exceptionally interesting.
