    Appam (registered 1913 to the British & African Steam Navigation Company, Limited). Uncaptioned sepia-tone real photo post card with good focus & contrast, ship's name prominent, toning in right front (not on ship), toning on corresponding back edge too, tiny corner crease. In 1916 this vessel was captured by the German cruiser Moewe and sailed to then-neutral United States. The US District Court ordered her return to the owning company, and it sailed as the Mandingo until the WWI armistice (after which she again became the Appam). "Passing Fort Santa Cruz, Entrance of Rio Harbor" unused Azo (triangles up, 1904 - 1918) real photo postcard, published by Brown & Shaffer in Newport News Virginia, album marks at the corners of both sides. Brazil tried to maintain neutrality at the start of World War I, but  torpedoing of its ships by German subs resulted in their joining the Allies in October 1917. On August 1 1918, after the Allies had squabbled over their usage, the Brazilian Navy departed from the port of Rio de Janeiro to work closely with US forces in the Atlantic -- rather than working with the Italians in the Mediterranean, or with the French along the African coast.     "Salvation Army making Doughnuts under / bombardment of German Guns, Front Line, France" showing female Salvation Army workers cooking for American soldiers during World War I. Widely reported throughout America by hardened war correspondents, the anticipated scandals never materialized and the Salvation Army reaped millions of dollars worth of free publicity. Their charitable organization was thereby transformed. Black & white postcard from the Chicago Daily News--an example of the publicity. $12.00 wsc. Fuller' Bath, Maine" black & white postcard, high-quality (near photographic) printing in Germany, mailed 1908 to (Mrs. Floyd) Carlie Doty in South Park ME from her aunt Maggie in Sherman ME (light DPO cancel), 2 small corner creases, another corner worn, cancel on front, album impressions at the corners.     "Steamer Yale leaving Harbor, / San Pedro, Cal." color postcard from O. Newman Company, mailed 1912 to Missouri, stamp removed, corner crease, corner & edge wear, partial cancel on front. When registered to the Pacific Navigation Company, this coastal steamer also serviced Los Angeles, before being sold to the Navy. In World War I, after overhaul & modification, this ship transported hundreds of thousands of soldiers in Europe.     "STRASBOURG. - 22 Novembre 1918. - Le Général Gouraude pendant le Défilé des éléments de la IVe Armée / ..." Green back, writing on back, The prosthesis on the General's right arm is visible; that arm was lost when he led a French expeditionary force at the Dardanelles in 1915. He commanded the 4th Army mentioned in the caption till the end of World War I, and later served as a one-time member of the supreme war council. $8.00 am(f)wg

"The Moonshiners" real photos picturing two tents (one with indicated caption in banner), some men, a dog & a flag. One mailed Sep 1917 at Chillicothe Ohio has a little edge wear & message stating there were 15,000 there. The other an unmailed CYKO, with album marks on back. What these show are the tents of some of the 15,000 workers (not soldiers, soldier trainees were not allowed to bring pets) who arrived there to build Camp Sherman for training World War I soldiers. The first of more than 120,000 men trained there left for Europe later, in June 1918. Obviously unique. Both for $47.50 (ocw)

    "T. v Eckenbrecher 14" printed signature of German artist Themistocles von Eckenbrecher on art depicting 'Zeppelin über Antwerpen' (as we learn from the back) acting as a military observation platform, Feldpostkarte used 31.3.15 at Sobernheim (very clear cancel on back, no stamp necessary) to a Belgian address, soft corners, traces of cancel ink on front. Postkarte sold for the creation of a strong German air fleet: 'Deutscher Luftflotten-Verein / für Schaffung einer starken deutschen Luftflotte / und Förderung der Luftaherschule! /Jahresbeitrag: einschl. Vereinszeitschrift / 'Die Luftflotte' nach Selbsteinschäßtung / mindestens 3,- Mk. Berlin W 57, Grobenstraße 27.' On canvas, this artist's work is infrequently offered at major auction houses with estimates in the tens of thousands of dollars. Bad Sobernheim is located in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany. After its defeat at Liege by the Germans, the Belgian Army fell back to Antwerp, and was forced to retreat still further after heavy fighting such as that shown. $90.00 zbam(a)w-r NEW / NEU / NOUVEAU

    "U. S. MOTORCYCLE CORPS, SHOWING ARMOURED MOTORCYCLE WITH MACHINE GUN." More precisely: a shielded Hotchkiss machine gun on an early Harley-Davidson.     "U. S. S. Imperator." a side view underway, during her brief (3 months during 1919) US Navy service bringing troops home after World War I. More often seen as a transatlantic passenger ship, she was for a time the largest of that type (after the Titanic sank), beginning life as the SS Imperator for the Hamburg America Line.     "U.S.S. WEST-MADAKET  In the Port of Rotterdam / 1-18-19" unused real photo postcard, image printed at an angle to the edges, noticeable edge wear & toning both sides. Commissioned in late October 1918, this was her first (delivering flour) of only 2 trips in World War I; decommissioning was in May 1919. We doubt there are many photos of this ship from that brief period in existence. This Liberty Ship was later to be torpedoed in the Atlantic, sinking on May 5 1943. $12.00 s(m)nw
